A long-term support of FMEA trainings

ArcelorMittal is the world’s largest steel producer, it is present in more than 60 countries. It is also leader in all high-value technical steel markets, including the automotive and manufacturing.

In France, the groups has eight industrial sites and several Research & Development sites. Moreover, ArcelorMittal employs about 22,000 people and produces seven million tons of steel slabs per years.

The Group strategy is to found its technical leadership on the industrial excellence of its production and research tools. ArcelorMittal owns 14 R&D centers in the world including the research campus of Maizières-lès-Metz which is the largest, with 550 researchers. This is largely on this campus the new steels are created for the automotive and the industrial process capable to manufacture them. The centers in charge of these developments have to conform to the requirements from the automotive industry and therefore be certified ISO/TS 16949.

In 2015. Euro-Symbiose and the steel group have initiated a collaboration to make improve the Automotive and Method centers in their knowledge of Product and Design FMEA and give to this approach all its added value. Following on from trainings organized in February and September 2015, ArcelorMittal wished to follow its work initiated with Euro-Symbiose in order to support the teams in their implementation of the FMEA approach on the Arcelor R&D site in Maizières-Lès-Metz.

Isabelle Delugré, Euro-Symbiose consultant, is in charge of this support mission, after having hosted the Product and Design FMEA trainings in 2015.

Supporting the FMEA teams: what is all about?

The coaching is organized in group in order to further the experience sharing (two or three teams per session). During this support, several activities are done according to needs such as:

- Reviewing the work done
- Answers to the questions
- Sharing and feedbacks

The role of our trainer is to help the FMEA referees and facilitators in their practice to identify the state of advancement of FMEA studies engaged and peruse them with the teams. She should also take stock of the work done from the training step and pay particular attention to the cohesion of practices in accordance with standard defined and implemented during the training.

Patrick Hug, Quality Manager from the Method center of ArcelorMittal Maizières Research, testimonies about the work done by our consultant:

“We use the FMEA method within the company (40 permanent FMEA), since few years, because it is a required practice of companies which like us are certified ISO/TS 16949. However, although this tool is powerful, our vision was a little bit obscured and its utilization was perceived by the project leaders as restrictive, heavy, administrative and without or with a few added-value.

Otherwise, the third party auditors are watching with more and more vigilance the relevance of our FMEA studies. They look at the efficiency, conformity and especially our mastery in relation to what’s the automotive industry asks.
We are convinced that the FMEA should and must be part of the toolbox for each researcher – creator. We considered that we had to progress by making the FMEA method powerful and if possible very attractive; therefore we decided to call on Euro-Symbiose and its trainer.

We chose « three different angles of attack” for her interventions:

- The researchers, expert of the FMEA approach with who the consultant realized the functional analysis. This accompanying lasted three days in order to take the time to minutely explain the process;
- The coaching with manager whose the major problematic was to know how to intelligently use the FMEA in the client portfolio and to determine which was the issue;
- The last angle of this accompanying was the coaching of veterans toward the excellence.”

What were the results noted after the interventions of our consultant?

“Today, we can say with the intervention of Isabelle, our team has a better understanding of FMEA, and precisely of Product and Design FMEAs. The use of this approach become more efficient and much better understood, accepted, applied efficiently with people who are proud of that, and who, thanks to this method, could obviously increase their power of searchers “to succeed their design in one shot”. A benefit for them and for the Group. A constraint turned into advantage!

For 2016, we would like to continue our work with Euro-Symbiose and get a coaching of our new arrivals (engineers-doctors) in order that they get since the beginning a thorough knowledge of FMEA. We would like that these training cycles be done at once by a Euro-Symbiose consultant but also by the experts of our company”.

What did Isabelle Delugré bring to you during her interventions?

“She is a high-level trainer who knows very well the ISO/TS 16949 standard. Moreover, as a passionate of the FMEA subject, she has been able to make each support session interactive. Finally, I would say that the experience of the steel world gained during her professional experience confers to Isabelle a major advantage in relation to credibility regarding people with who she worked”.
