EURO-SYMBIOSE supports STMicroelectronics in the deployment of the AIAG-VDA FMEA approach

Written by: Valérie LE COUEDIC, Technical Director in charge of managing this support project, was then assisted by Délia THOMINET, Senior Consultant, in running FMEA training workshops, and by Stéphanie BAZIN and Maélise PREST in creating the e-learning modules in Talentsoft.
Founded in 1987, STMicroelectronics (STMicro) is a French-Italian company with global reach that develops, manufactures and markets semiconductors and electronic components. It supplies the automotive industry in particular.
As soon as the new harmonised FMEA approach was published in accordance with the AIAG-VDA manual in June 2019, STMicro asked EURO-SYMBIOSE to train and support its international teams in order to:
- Understand the main changes, improvements and benefits compared to the 4th edition of the AIAG.
- Know how to put the seven steps of the AIAG-VDA FMEA approach into practice on topics specific to STMicro’s products and business lines.
- Know how to train teams internally and independently on this new approach.
- Raise awareness of FMEA among participants through e-learning.
- Coach teams in carrying out new FMEA or modifying existing FMEA according to the new principles of the AIAG-VDA approach.
Since September 2019, this support has been provided on a gradual basis, and in the context of Covid-19, the training workshops have been conducted remotely :
- 2019: Upgrading of the first product & process FMEA experts
- 2020:
- Training workshop for seven pilot FMEA groups, made up of future FMEA facilitators and participants, with a view to creating concrete case studies;
- Creation of e-learning modules to raise participants’ awareness of product and process FMEA.
- 2021: The objective for 2021 was for STMicro teams to achieve complete mastery of the subject.
- Continuation of training workshops;
- Development of rating grids based on examples specific to each profession;
- Coaching of project teams in the implementation of their product or process FMEA;
- Creation of dedicated training modules incorporating case studies specific to each professional group, developed from the workshops;
- Creation of e-learning awareness modules in Talentsoft (French/English/Italian);
- Training of internal trainers (key points of the method and teaching techniques).
- 2022 / 2023
- Continuation of internal trainer training;
- Training of facilitators;
- Coaching of teams as needed.
At the end of the service, the employees trained and coached by EURO-SYMBIOSE will in turn be able to independently train and support STMicro teams.
In a few figures, EURO-SYMBIOSE’s support has made it possible to:
- Train more than 500 people (facilitators, trainers, participants)
- Develop 15 training kits for internal trainers
- Develop 6 e-learning modules in English, French and Italian for AMDEC participants, and also as a prerequisite for all AMDEC training for facilitators or trainers
- Support 17 projects
Testimonial from Béatrice BOUTEMY – Project Manager for the AMDEC AIAG-VDA deployment at STMicro
“This new FMEA approach defined by car manufacturers required a great deal of effort to understand how to adapt it to the world of semiconductors, its environment and its technical constraints. To ensure that our teams adopted this approach successfully, we called on Euro-Symbiose, whose advice and professionalism were invaluable.
The diversity of our technical teams and sites was taken into account and we were able to create training modules with examples tailored to the reality of each field.
The need for staff capable of acting as facilitators led us to develop more interactive training modules, which were very well received.
Today, more than 1,700 people have completed at least the eLearning modules, and we have 60 internal trainers and more than 140 facilitators who have benefited from Euro-Symbiose’s training and have thus been able to support the launch of more than 600 FMEAs across all our sites: the roll-out is well underway!“
Testimonial from Valérie LE COUEDIC
“The unique feature of this project is the international rollout of the AIAG-VDA FMEA approach, tailored to STMicro’s business lines, with the added challenge of understanding the impact for the end customer, given STMicro’s position in the supply chain.
The initial workshops enabled us to develop concrete case studies, which were then used to develop training courses for future facilitators and internal trainers.
Training and support for teams in implementing the approach, backed up by e-learning modules in three languages, ensure that the approach is adopted by the teams on a long-term basis.”
Testimonial from Délia THOMINET
“STMicro opted for training courses tailored to each person’s role in the AMDEC approach. This enabled us to design specific modules, both in terms of duration and content, for project managers, facilitators and even internal trainers.
In addition, the examples and exercises in the various modules, as well as the rating tables, were adapted to the division concerned, enabling participants to better understand the AIAG-VDA FMEA methodology in their respective fields.
As a trainer and coach, this gave me the opportunity to work with employees from a wide range of professions and divisions in a multicultural context, making the assignment both varied and enriching.”
