Machine and process capability studies – #352
Context
Among the fundamental tools for controlling manufacturing processes, capability studies are at the forefront.
These studies are widely demanded by customers in industry, to ensure that before the start of mass production, suppliers will be able to produce compliant products using stable machines and manufacturing processes with little variation.
However, although they are widely used, the statistical concepts underlying these capability studies are often misunderstood and misapplied: it’s not just a matter of doing the maths!
In fact, there are a number of essential prerequisites to check before carrying out a relevant assessment of the performance of your machines and processes, or those of your suppliers.
Objectives
- Understand the basic statistical principles underlying capability studies.
- Understand the prerequisites for calculating capability indices.
- Know how to carry out capability studies: conditions and calculations
- Interpret the results of capability studies
Recommanded for
- Engineers or Technicians Industrialisation / Methods / Maintenance / Production / Quality
- People in charge of monitoring suppliers
- Auditors
Prerequisites
-
No pre-requisites. Knowledge of the basic principles of statistical concepts (mean, median, standard deviation, stability normality) would be a plus.
Specific operating conditions for remote sessions
- Have a PC equipped with a microphone, webcam and, if possible, a headset for greater comfort. Note: To blur or hide the view from behind, background screens are available in Zoom or Teams.
- A good Internet connection, tested before the session.
- Locate in a quiet, isolated area; switch to “not available” status in Teams; close your email access and mute your phone to avoid distraction during the session.
- To avoid off-topic discussions during the session, participants from the same organisation should not be grouped together in the same room, but rather at their own desks. Virtual sub-groups will be set up specifically for the exercises, which will also allow for mixed groups to be created.
- The webcam and microphone must be open during remote qualification/certification exams. It may also be necessary for us to check that you are the only one in the room.
- We ask that you connect at least 5 minutes before the beginning of the session.
Pedagogy
- The training is based on a large number of exercises to learn how to use the various statistical tools.
- Excel support is provided for calculating capability, studying normality and studying stability using control charts
- In the in-house setting, prior preparation enables data to be collected with a view to developing company-specific exercises.
Evaluation mode
- Knowledge test (multiple-choice questions)
Course materials
- Participant file containing training materials and practical exercises. Training materials in digital format are made available to trainees a few days before the course.
- An Excel file is provided with all the pre-formatted formulas, giving you all the tools you need to easily apply the statistical concepts after the training.
