Value Stream Mapping (VSM): Key Concepts – #80
Context
-
Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is a Lean management tool that visualizes the flow from customer demand to the delivery of products or services. It allows you to identify value-added activities and waste, helping to streamline and optimize both physical and information flows, ultimately improving overall performance.
-
Even if you have already carried out Lean projects, VSM enables you to structure your Lean approach more systematically to achieve benefits throughout the entire factory.
Objectives
- Understand the issues and scope to which VSM applies.
- Be able to identify the major flows that fall under VSM.
- Understand the concepts of lead time, takt time, and Muda.
- Build a flow map of the existing situation that is both readable and sufficiently documented.
- Using key Lean concepts, build a first-level target map and establish a macro action plan to achieve this target.
Recommanded for
- Industrial Directors
- Production Managers
- Process Managers
- Future Lean Managers
- Production Supervisors.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of fundamental Lean concepts (takt time, muda/non-VA, just-in-time, pull/push flow, workstation layout (U-shaped, chaku-chaku cell), production levelling (Heijunka), etc.)
Pedagogy
-
In Open training, based on a case study inspired by a real-life situation, trainees are asked to construct the three major elements of their first VSM (map of the current situation, target map, macro action plan) themselves. A progressive ‘correction’ is used to ensure that trainees’ understanding progresses at a consistent pace and that they truly master the tool.
-
In-house training, it is possible to work on a situation specific to the company with advance preparation. The duration of the training will be adapted according to the scope of the study and the existing data.
Evaluation mode
-
Assessment of acquired skills via a questionnaire incorporating role-playing scenarios.
Course materials
-
Participant’s file containing the presentations delivered during the training and the exercise materials.

Aurélien FACHE - KUHN HUARD
“The VSM tool is explained and detailed step by step in an excellent pedagogical way. “
Benoît FERQUEL - DEFONTAINE
“The combination of learning theoretical notions and their immediate application in the field through DO IT projects and tools such as VSM has opened the eyes of teams, whatever their position in the company. Today, the trend is reversed: it is visual management that is the main focus and this is complemented by information systems, whereas a year ago it was the opposite. Pragmatism and the participation of each person take precedence over everything else. “
