Objectives

In 30 minutes, the “MSP basics” e-learning module enables the learner to :

  • Discover the key elements of a control chart.
  • Know how to interpret a simple control chart.
  • Know how to check the capability of a process.

The learner will be introduced to the basic concepts of SPC : mean, range, standard deviation, process stability, common causes, assignable causes and capabilities (Cp/Cpk).

Recommanded for

Any public wishing to acquire basic knowledge of SPC.

No prerequisites.

Pedagogy

  • The module is divided into 3 learning sequences: Each sequence is composed of interactive activities and guidance from experts who will explain the pitfalls to avoid. At the end of the module, the learners can download a summary document.

Session 1

Identify the key elements of a control chart:

  • The components of a control chart (mean and range charts).
  • The steps involved in building a simple control chart.
  • The method of calculating means, ranges and control limits.
  • Pitfalls to avoid.
Session 2

Know how to interpret a simple control chart:

  • The 2 categories of variation: common causes and assignable causes.
  • The 4 signs of instability in a process for which action should be taken.
  • Pitfalls to avoid.
Session 3

Know how to check the capability of a process:

  • Process capability indices: Cp and Cpk.
  • Normal distribution required to calculate capabilities.
  • How Cp and Cpk are calculated and interpreted.
  • Pitfalls to avoid.
